Sexual addiction is a compulsive disorder in which the person is unable to control their sexual urges, behaviors, or thoughts. They will have a fixation on sex to the point it interferes in their normal day-to-day life and with their ability to have healthy, personal relationships. A sex addict will continue to engage in damaging behaviors despite facing risks to health, finances, relationships, or legal consequence.
Each case of Sex Addiction is different in type and scope, but all are defined by a set of compulsive behaviors. These compulsive behaviors involve:
– Compulsive searching for multiple partners
– Compulsive fixation on an unattainable partner
– Compulsive masturbation
– Compulsive love relationships
– Compulsive sexuality in a relationship
Risks of Sexual Addiction
Sexual addiction carries with it a number of unique risk factors, namely sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Sex addicts are at high-risk of developing HIV, herpes, HPV, hepatitis, syphilis, gonorrhea, and other STDs. Sexual addiction also attributes to a number of emotional consequences due to its stigmatized nature including feelings of depression, guilt, shame, self-hatred, hopelessness, anxiety, moral conflict, distorted thinking, and remorse. Sex addicts often find themselves only having slight satisfaction in their sexual lives and a hard time connecting with their sex partners. It also leads to relational problems in which both partners experience stress and loss of self-esteem.
